Ettiquette at upstream

Respect, humility, and courtesy are core values in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and practicing proper gym etiquette ensures a positive and safe environment for everyone. Whether you’re new to Jiu-Jitsu or a seasoned practitioner, here are some important guidelines to follow:

1. RESPECT YOUR INSTRUCTORS AND TRAINING PARTNERS

Always address your instructors and training partners with respect. Acknowledge their guidance and the effort of your training partners.

Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Jiu-Jitsu is about growth, not ego, and we encourage learning from each and every sparring session.

2. ARRIVE ON TIME

Punctuality is crucial. Arriving late disrupts the flow of class and may prevent you from warming up properly. If you’re running late, make sure to inform the instructor before class begins.

3. KEEP YOUR MAT AREA CLEAN

Keep your training space tidy. This includes cleaning up your personal belongings, equipment, and ensuring your gi or no-gi attire is clean and in good condition.

Wipe down mats if required after class, as it helps maintain hygiene and shows respect to your fellow practitioners.

4. PROPER ETIQUETTE DURING SPARRING

Start sparring sessions with a handshake or a respectful gesture to show mutual respect.

Always tap out if you’re in an uncomfortable or potentially dangerous position. This ensures both your safety and that of your partner.

If your partner taps out, immediately stop the roll and give them space to recover. Check in with them to ensure they’re okay.

5. BE MINDFUL OF SPACE AND SAFETY

Keep your training area organized and respectful of others’ space. Don’t crowd other groups during drills or sparring.

Avoid using excessive force when sparring, especially with beginners or smaller partners. Jiu-Jitsu is about technique, not strength.

6. MAINTAIN PERSONAL HYGIENE

Shower before class, trim your nails, and keep your gi clean. Hygiene is critical in a close-contact sport like Jiu-Jitsu to prevent the spread of infections and maintain a positive, healthy environment for everyone.

7. RESPECT THE ACADEMY’S RULES AND POLICIES

Follow all gym policies, including safety guidelines, scheduling, and any updates or changes the instructors or management communicate.

If you’re unsure about something, ask. Our staff is here to help you understand and succeed in your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

8. BE SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING

The Jiu-Jitsu community thrives on support and mutual respect. Encourage your teammates, whether they're just starting or preparing for a competition. We all grow together.

Why Ettiquette Matters

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is as much about character development as it is about mastering techniques. Practicing good gym etiquette reflects your respect for the martial art, your teammates, and your own growth. By following these guidelines, we foster a positive atmosphere where everyone can feel comfortable, train hard, and improve together.
