Hygiene at upstream
Cleanliness and hygiene are essential to creating a safe, respectful, and enjoyable training environment for everyone on the mats. At Upstream BJJ, we take hygiene seriously—for the health of our students and the integrity of our academy. Here’s what we expect from all students:
Wash Your Gi and Gear After Every Class
A clean gi or no-gi uniform is required each time you step on the mats. Rash guards, shorts, and spats must also be freshly laundered.
Shower and Maintain Personal Cleanliness
Arrive to class clean, with trimmed nails and fresh breath. Deodorant is encouraged, but please avoid heavy colognes or perfumes.
No Training While Sick or Injured
If you’re feeling unwell or recovering from a skin condition, please stay home until fully cleared.
Footwear and Mat Awareness
Always wear shoes or flip-flops off the mats—never walk barefoot in the restroom or lobby. Mats should only be stepped on with bare feet or wrestling shoes used exclusively for the mat.
Report Skin Issues Immediately
If you notice a rash, infection, or anything unusual, alert a coach right away. We will handle it with discretion and prioritize everyone’s safety.
Help Keep the Academy Clean
Pick up after yourself, return equipment, and be mindful of your training area. Our team cleans the mats and facility regularly, and your support helps maintain that standard.
Why it Matters
Jiu Jitsu is a close-contact sport, and good hygiene protects all of us from illness and skin infections like ringworm, staph, and impetigo. Keeping yourself—and your gear—clean shows respect for your teammates, your academy, and the art itself.
